If you think that you may need one or more tooth extractions in Charleston, SC, Dr. Lawrence Fischer is here to help. At Everything Dental, we specialize in gentle tooth extractions. Our team will remove your troublesome teeth and ensure that you can get out of pain and back to your normal routine.
Not only that, but we also offer platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) bone grafting. This advanced technique is ideal for patients who are interested in getting dental implants in the future. With PRF bone grafting, you can strengthen your jawbone and ensure the best possible outcome when it’s time for Dr. Fischer to place your implants.
Tooth extractions are only recommended when it’s no longer possible to save a tooth. As a conservative dentist, Dr. Fischer will always recommend preserving your tooth when it’s possible to do so. However, there are some cases when a tooth extraction may be the best option for restoring your oral health:
First, you’ll come in for a visit with Dr. Fischer so that he can take X-rays of your mouth, examine your tooth, and determine if a tooth extraction is truly necessary for your case. If you’re interested in sedation for your tooth extraction, you can also discuss this with Dr. Fischer and learn more about your options at Everything Dental.
At your next visit, Dr. Fischer will begin by cleaning up the treatment area. Then, he will numb the treatment area to ensure your comfort. If you’ve chosen to be sedated, you will feel very relaxed and comfortable, and you may even start to fall asleep.
Simple extractions are used when the tooth is fully erupted from the gums. In this procedure, Dr. Fischer will use a tool called a dental elevator to wiggle the tooth loose from the socket. Then, once it’s loose enough, he will grab it with a pair of dental forceps and remove it from the socket.
A surgical extraction may be needed if your tooth has not fully erupted, is broken down to the gum line, or in a few other situations. Dr. Fischer will make a small incision in the gums near your tooth. Then, he will cut the tooth into small pieces through this opening and remove the tooth fragments. This process is called “sectioning.”
Once Dr. Fischer has finished removing your tooth, he will clean, disinfect, and suture the area shut. Then, he will repeat this process if you need any other teeth to be removed. Once you’re all finished, Dr. Fischer will send you home with a set of instructions to follow as you heal and recover. You can usually go back to work and your normal routine within a day or two, but it will take 2-3 weeks for your socket to heal completely.
First, let’s start with the basics of bone grafting. Bone grafts are usually recommended for patients who may not have a strong or dense enough jawbone to accommodate a dental implant. This surgical procedure involves placing bone granules into the socket where your missing tooth used to be.
Over time, these granules heal and encourage the development of healthy, natural jawbone material. In turn, this strengthens your jawbone enough for a dental implant. Depending on the situation, a bone graft may be done in the same appointment as a tooth extraction, or during a separate visit to Everything Dental.
At our office, we use Platelet-Rich Fibrin to provide the best possible outcome for bone grafts in Charleston, SC. Platelet-Rich Fibrin (PRF) is a special material that’s derived from a sample of your own blood. When used in bone grafting, it helps speed up the healing process, improves overall bone quality, and even helps reduce post-procedure discomfort.
First, Dr. Fischer will take a sample of your blood. This takes only a few moments. Then, he will load it into a special machine that will spin it and turn it into PRF (Platelet-Rich Fibrin) for your bone grafting procedure. It usually takes about 15 minutes to prepare your PRF sample chairside/
While your PRF sample is being produced, Dr. Fischer will clean and numb your mouth. Then, he will create an opening in your gums and jaw bone in the area where the bone graft will be placed.
Once your PRF sample is ready, Dr. Fischer will mix it with bone particles to create a substance that’s called “sticky bone.” Then, he will place it into your jawbone, molding and shaping it to ensure that it fits perfectly.
Once your bone graft is in place, Dr. Fischer will apply a special membrane to the area and suture it in place. This protects the bone grafting site and helps ensure that it heals properly. Then, you’ll be sent home with some instructions to follow as your mouth heals. You’ll be able to get back to your normal routine within a day or two, but it may take up to 3-6 months for the bone graft to fully heal and integrate with your jawbone.
